Take a half-day tour of Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon.  This tour is available in the morning hours or afternoon, when you can view a breathtaking sunset!

Begin with a relaxing drive to the south of Attica along a scenic coastal road, the Athens Riviera.   You will enjoy splendid views of some of the most beautiful beaches of Athens, including Glyfada, Varkiza and Vouliagmeni.  Along the way, we recommended a stop at the magnificent natural landscape of Vouliagmeni Lake, famous for its mineral waters and healing properties (located just 25 km from the city center).   As an option, you may take a swim at the natural hot springs, or relax at the sun beds that surround the lake.

We arrive at our final destination, the impressive Cape Sounio, at the southernmost point of the Attica region (about 65 km from Athens), overlooking the amazing Saronic Gulf and the Aegean Sea.  The cliff is crowned by the 6^th century BC Temple of Poseidon which is dedicated to the mythological God of the Sea.

The remains are perched on the headland, surrounded on three sides by the sea.  As with all Greek temples, the Poseidon building was rectangular, with a colonnade on all four sides.  The total number of original Doric columns was 34, and 15 of these columns still stand today.  They were made of locally quarried white marble.

Cape Sounio has been recognized since prehistoric times as a special place of worship, but was also considered a location of strategic military importance.   According to Greek Mythology, Cape Sounio is the spot where Aegeus, king of Athens, leapt to his death off the cliff, thus giving his name to the Aegean Sea.

The beautiful landscape and panoramic view, where on a clear day you can see some of the Greek islands, makes this an ideal location to complete your excursion by indulging yourself with a savory lunch or drink at a local seaside restaurant or cafe!

Tip: THIS is probably where you will take the best selfie of your entire trip to Athens!  🙂
