We depart from Athens in the morning, follow the coastal National Highway and drive through the Corinth Canal.  We continue towards the south of Peloponnese and in approximately 3 hours time we arrive to our main destination.

Sparta was founded in the 9^th century BC and it was the most powerful military city of Ancient Greece.  The Spartans had dedicated their lives to serving their country with courage, honor, by all means and with no fear:  King Leonidas and the 300 Spartans are still to this day considered the embodiment of determination and strength.  The colossal bronze statue of King Leonidas is located in the central stadium of Sparta!

Modern day Sparta, capital of the prefecture of Lakonia, lies on the eastern foothills of Mount Taygetos in the Evrotas River valley.  The city has been built upon the site of ancient Sparta.  To the southwest stands Mount Taygetos with its towering peaks and wild beauty.  To the east of the city stands the forested Parnonas mountain range.   The natural environment of the region will surely enchant you.

In Sparta, our tour includes a visit to the Acropolis, the Ancient Theater and the Archaeological site of Menelaion.  You will also have the chance to visit the Archaeological Museum and the Byzantine fortified city of Mystras, just 7 km from Sparta.  Continue to see some of the monasteries and churches with impressive frescoes, plus you will have the chance to walk through the ancient castle and admire the Byzantine ruins.

Some details about the Byzantine archeological site of Mystras, a Unesco World Heritage site: was built as an amphitheatre around the fortress erected in 1249 by the prince of Achaia, William of Villehardouin.  Reconquered by the Byzantines, then occupied by the Turks and the Venetians, the city was abandoned in 1832, leaving only the breathtaking medieval ruins standing in a beautiful landscape.

During the tour you will have a chance to take a lunch break at a traditional tavern of Mystras.
