Starting from Athens we begin our journey along the coastal National Highway.  Enroute we make a short stop at the Corinth Canal.  We continue driving south for approximately 40 minutes to our main destination, Mycenae, the kingdom of mythical Agamemnon.  First sung by Homer in his epics, it is the most important and richest palatial center of the Late Bronze Age in Greece.  Its name was given to one of the greatest civilizations of Greek prehistory, the Mycenaean civilization, while the myths related to its history have inspired poets and writers over many centuries.

The site was first occupied in the seventh millennium BC (Neolithic period), however very little remains of this early settlement because of continuous re-occupation up until the historical period.   Most of the monuments visible today were erected in the Late Bronze Age, between 1350 and 1200 BC, when the site was at its peak.

Taking a tour of the archaeological site, you will see the Lion Gate, located at the entrance of the Bronze Age citadel of the city.  Discover the impressively huge Cyclopean wall surrounding and protecting the Acropolis, believed to be constructed by mythical giants, and a series of buildings, possibly the residences of high officials.   Also significant, is the tomb of king Agamemnon, the biggest and best preserved of all the tombs.  Finally, visit the museum of Mycenae, for a complete insight of the Mycenaean culture.

Leaving the site and before we start our way back to Athens, we can organize an optional visit at a Nemea winery for some tasting of local wine varieties, or if you prefer, a visit to the picturesque port of Nafplio followed by lunch at a seaside tavern.
