Starting from Athens we begin our journey along the coastal National Highway until we reach the Corinth Canal, where we will make a short stop.  At about an hour’s drive from the canal, we arrive at our main destination, Ancient Epidaurus, located on the north eastern side of Peloponnese, in the region of Argolis.

Epidaurus is one of the most popular archaeological sites in Greece, mostly famous for its Ancient Theatre.  Considered as one of the purest masterpieces of Greek architecture, the theatre was constructed in the late 4th century BC to host religious ceremonial events in honor of the god Asclepius, whose healing center was located a few steps away.  Renowned for its symmetry and the incredible acoustics, this classical theatre is surrounded by lush greenery and offers a beautiful view to the valley below.  Presently, Ancient Greek drama performances are hosted here every summer during the Epidaurus Festival.

The city is also known as the motherland of Asclepius, the god of medicine and healing.  Epidaurus was the most celebrated healing center of the Classical world, the place where ill people went in the hope of being cured. To find out the right cure for their ailments, they spent a night in a sleeping hall and in their dreams, the god himself would advise them what they had to do to regain their health.  Within the sanctuary there was a guest house with 160 guestrooms. There are also mineral springs in the vicinity, which may have been used in healing.   At the main archaeological area, among its principal monuments, of particular interest is the Temple of Asclepius.  The vast site, with its temples and hospital buildings devoted to its healing gods, provides valuable insight into the healing cults of Greek and Roman times.

Leaving the site and before we start our way back to Athens, we can organize an optional visit at a Nemea winery for some tasting of local wine varieties, or if you prefer, a visit to the picturesque port of Nafplio followed by lunch at a seaside tavern.
