ACROPOLIS MUSEUM

Located at the foot of the Acropolis Hill, the Acropolis Museum replaced the original one at the Rock of the Acropolis and has been the most popular museum since its opening in 2009.  With exhibition space of over 14.000 square meters, it narrates the stories of the Athenian Acropolis from the prehistoric times until the end of antiquity.  The Museum is not only praised for its huge collection of exhibits, findings, marbles and statues, but also for its aesthetic and modern design that incorporate excavations, visible through a glass floor, and offers a panoramic view of the Acropolis.

NATIONAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM

The National Archaeological Museum of Athens is the largest archaeological museum in Greece and one of the most important museums in the world devoted to ancient Greek art.  It was founded at the end of the 19th century to house and protect antiquities from all over Greece, thus displaying their historical, cultural and artistic value.  Its abundant collections, with more than 11.000 exhibits, provide a panorama of Greek civilization from the beginnings of Prehistory to Late Antiquity.  The museum is housed in an imposing neoclassical building and the vast exhibition space and galleries house five large permanent collections, among them the Prehistoric  Collection, Sculptures, Bronze artifacts and the only Egyptian and Near Eastern Antiquities Collection in Greece.

WAR MUSEUM

The War Museum was established by the Hellenic State in 1964 in order to honor all those who fought for the country’s freedom.  The Museum’s mission, as this was determined by its Establishing Act, is to collect, preserve and exhibit military artifacts and memorabilia, and to study, document and project the sacred struggles of the Greek nation from antiquity to the present day, in order to preserve the national memory and promote the historic continuity of Hellenism.

MUSEUM OF CYCLADIC ART

The Museum of Cycladic Art is dedicated to the study and promotion of ancient cultures of the Aegean and Cyprus, with special emphasis on Cycladic Art of the 3rd millennium BC.  It was founded in 1986, and since then it has grown in size to accommodate new acquisitions, obtained either through direct purchases or through donations by important collectors and institutions.  Today, in the galleries of the MCA the visitor can approach three major subjects:  Cycladic Art 3200-2000 BC, Ancient Greek Art 2000 BC-AD 395 and Ancient Cypriot Art 3900 BC-6th C. AD.

BENAKI MUSEUM

The Benaki Museum houses Greek works of art from the prehistorical to the modern times, an extensive collection of Asian art, hosts periodic exhibitions and maintains a state-of-the-art restoration and conservation workshop.  The main museum focuses on Greek culture over the span of the country’s history.
